Snopes has got to be one of my favorite web sites. Why? Well, if you haven’t heard of it, or have never been there, then you should go check it out. It’s a site built around the refuting and debunking of urban myth, web lore, and general rumor-mongering. Here’s when you should use Snopes: anytime you get an email, or see a post that is a ‘forward’, or read something that starts off with alarmist verbiage (i.e., ‘DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FEET! SCIENTISTS SAID THIS IS HOW A NEW COMPUTER VIRUS IS BEING SPREAD!). You know what I’m talking about. You see them everyday. You probably have perpetrated a post or three yourself.
Snopes, I find, is a trove unlike any other. The Web is full of nonsense being spread by innocent users who simply take things at face value. I wish that we lived in such a world; unfortunately, we do not. Until we do, check out Snopes when you see something that doesn’t quite sound right, or is overly sensationalist or alarmist. You’ll be surprised at how much more exciting (and safe) the truth really is.
